Key Points

- AFF wanted to implement an auto labelling system at their cotton gins

- Efficient integration was critical for the solution to be implemented during peak cotton ginning season

- Clevvi leveraged a modern SCADA system called Ignition to rapidly test and roll out the new system across 7 ginning facilities

- This cut down manual efforts and human error, increased efficiency, and provided valuable cloud insights and control

Australian Food and Fibre (AFF) is a major cotton ginning company that operates multiple sites across Australia. With a steadfast commitment to producing the highest quality cotton, AFF manages every step of the supply chain, combining extensive experience and expertise across cotton growing, ginning, warehousing, classing, marketing, and shipping. As a vertically integrated agribusiness, AFF was looking to optimize efficiency and accuracy in its cotton bale labelling processes across its ginning network.

the challenge

AFF wanted to implement an automated labelling solution at its 7 ginning facilities to replace error-prone manual processes. However, this presented some key challenges. Firstly, AFF needed a partner who could thoroughly understand its current manual labelling workflows. The solution required tight integration between information technology (IT) systems like Oracle databases and operational technology (OT) systems comprising programmable logic controllers (PLCs) on the factory floor. Another challenge was implementing changes during peak cotton ginning season without disrupting operations. Overall coordination between legacy factory equipment and new technologies was critical.

the solution

To address these needs, AFF collaborated with Clevvi to implement an automated labelling system using an advanced industrial software platform. Clevvi developed a cloud-based architecture that integrated AFF's existing corporate databases and factory floor equipment. The solution tied together AFF's information systems with their physical production systems. Clevvi smoothly deployed new automated labelling machines across all of AFF's 7 cotton ginning facilities. By linking AFF's information technology and on-site equipment, Clevvi delivered an end-to-end labelling solution covering the entire workflow.

The Clevvi solution delivered measurable results for AFF. Manual labelling efforts were significantly reduced through increased process automation. Human errors from manual data entry were minimized with auto-generated bale labels. Overall equipment effectiveness improved at the ginning facilities. The Ignition SCADA implementation provided enhanced control and insights into plant operations. Importantly, Clevvi’s solution established a strategic platform to enable future innovations and continuous improvements across AFF’s network.

Clevvi  accessed real time ERP system data and overlaid this information on a device camera feed to a phone or tablet. The solution uses AR which shows product, weight and expiry in tubs using unique QR “license plates” instantly visually highlights expired product. The technologies included QR codes, computer vision/AR, Bluetooth/UWB, and data integration.
