Refrigeration is vital for storing pharmaceuticals, particularly biologics, vaccines, and antibiotics, as these drugs are sensitive to temperature fluctuations. Improper storage can lead to rapid degradation, rendering medications ineffective and posing risks to human health.

Annually, a significant number of medications are wasted due to inadequate storage. The World Health Organization estimates that in low- and middle-income countries, over 25% of drugs are exposed to incorrect temperatures during transportation and storage, resulting in a 50% reduction in effectiveness. Even in high-income countries, poor storage infrastructure contributes to substantial wastage.

The consequences of this wastage extend beyond financial losses. Ineffective medications can lead to antimicrobial resistance, especially concerning for infections where proper treatment is crucial. Conditions like diabetes or HIV/AIDS also require consistent medication for health management; improper storage can lead to uncontrolled progression and life-threatening situations.

Globally, the impact is profound, especially in underserved regions. Inadequate access to healthcare resources coupled with wasted medications exacerbates health disparities. Remote areas face challenges in obtaining essential drugs, and poor storage amplifies these hurdles.

Solving this issue necessitates multiple strategies. Investments in reliable refrigeration systems for healthcare facilities are vital. Education for healthcare workers on proper medication handling is crucial. Developing more stable drug formulations less susceptible to temperature changes can mitigate risks.

To track their environmental sustainability, Stahmann Webster wanted to fully quantify and report on carbon emissions associated with fertiliser use across their Queensland orchards. This required extracting raw data from thousands of paper fertilizer invoices from each of their fertilizer suppliers, across multiple locations. The challenge of collecting and calculating emissions data stemmed from the diversity of each data source/format, which made manual processing extremely inefficient and inaccurate.

  • Clevvi Technology created Fridge Brain a brand-new invention, which detects temperature issues in pharmacy fridges that hold vaccines in real time, across Australia. FridgeBrain, can revolutionise how pharmacies keep vaccines cold.
The technology, which has taken the company years to develop, detects issues in temperature, sends alerts out and logs information about the temperature with $100,000 trial, funded through the State Government's Ignite Ideas fund, would prove Fridge Brain was essential for pharmacies to prevent them from possibly administering tainted vaccines or having to throw out thousands of dollars in stock
"Fridge Brain is a vaccine fridge that uses temperature and door-opening sensors to report real-time problems with it and then it uploads them to an online portal," he said.
"It has a couple of advantages — it gives you any real-time issues with the fridge.
"You get a notification after-hours and then can go online to see what's wrong with the fridge.
"Our technology is making it a lot easier for them to comply with guidelines and take a lot of the risk away from losing vaccines and also the safeguard against vaccines used being compromised."
Vaccines must be kept between 2degreesC and 8degreesC.

  • Innovation Minister Leeanne Enoch visited the company. Ms Enoch said several Toowoomba small businesses had benefited from government funding to kick-start new projects.

  • "This (FridgeBrain) idea is absolutely incredible," she said.

FridgeBrain stands as an innovative IoT solution developed by Clevvi Technology, addressing critical issues in medical refrigeration. This system provides real-time analytics to alert healthcare providers when refrigeration units are operating sub-optimally, posing risks of costly wastage or compromising the effectiveness and safety of refrigerated drugs due to temperature fluctuations or unit faults.

The system operates 24/7 in real time, employing strategically placed sensors within the refrigeration units for precise temperature monitoring. These sensors continuously collect data, which is then transmitted to a secure data warehouse. In this warehouse, the data is swiftly converted into actionable analytics. This information is easily accessible through smartphones, tablets, and web portals, allowing healthcare professionals to monitor the status of their refrigerated medications at any time.

FridgeBrain's advanced monitoring capabilities enable early detection of any deviations from the optimal temperature range. This timely alert system empowers healthcare providers to take immediate corrective action, preventing costly medication spoilage or dangerous situations where drugs may become ineffective or even harmful to patients.

By leveraging IoT technology, FridgeBrain provides a comprehensive solution for maintaining the integrity of refrigerated medications. Its real-time monitoring, coupled with accessible analytics, offers peace of mind to healthcare professionals, ensuring the safety and effectiveness of vital pharmaceuticals.

Clevvi  accessed real time ERP system data and overlaid this information on a device camera feed to a phone or tablet. The solution uses AR which shows product, weight and expiry in tubs using unique QR “license plates” instantly visually highlights expired product. The technologies included QR codes, computer vision/AR, Bluetooth/UWB, and data integration.
